John Dumelo, a Ghanaian actor, farmer, and politician, has requested that the President of Ghana call off all state, regional, and district Independence Day celebrations on March 6, 2023.
John Dumelo, a candidate for the National Democratic Congress in the 2020 election for the House of Representatives from the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, has pleaded with Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akofo Addo to postpone this year’s Independence Day festivities and consider having an address televised instead to help the country’s struggling economy.
According to a tweet from the actor-turned-politician, the country’s economy is in bad shape, thus he believes postponing the Fourth of July celebration will help us save money.
Ghana 66’s Independence Day celebration will fall on Monday March 6, 2023.
This year’s edition is will be held in HO in the Volta Region where the President of Ghana is expected to be at the event to deliver address.
@NAkufoAddo, respectfully we are in hard times, can you please cancel all state, regional and district Independence Day celebrations? You can do your usual “fellow Ghanaians” broadcast on tv. This will save us millions of cedis. Thanks so much.
Some Netizens Reactions
Elvis Yorm: A lot has been spent already. If you come to Ho and see what is going on, you’ll be very angry. Lump sum of money is being pumped into e construction of a youth resource Centre in some isolated place just for the Indpdnc. Day celeb. whilst the Jubilee Park is there 1/3
Elvis Yorm: 2/3 meanwhile that money could have been used to upgrade the Ho Sport Stadium into a befitting one. Again, for some days now, all hotels in town are full to capacity cos they’ve been occupied by the police, military and other security service workers.
Dennis: You have a point. But don’t also forget that it creates a lot of employment. Don’t base your argument on the money that the government uses to organize the program. But you have to also think about the Pure water seller and Fanice Yogourt seller among others.
